Most homeowners think a lot about where their cameras go, but not where the recorder goes. That’s a mistake. The recorder is where all your footage lives, and its location affects how secure your system is, how well it holds up over time, and how easy it is to service down the track.
Recorder location
A suitable recorder position needs four things
Ventilation
- Avoid enclosed spaces that trap heat.
- Leave enough room for air to move around the unit.
Security
- Keep the recorder away from obvious public access.
- Do not make routine maintenance impossible.
Cable access
- Choose a point that avoids unnecessarily long runs.
- Allow room for neat terminations and future additions.
Power and network
- Provide dependable power nearby.
- Keep the router or network connection within practical reach.
The easiest cupboard is not always the best recorder location.
Why the recorder’s location matters
Your CCTV recorder, whether it’s a DVR or an NVR, stores the footage from every camera on the system. If someone can walk up and unplug it, steal it, or damage it, your entire recording history can disappear in seconds. If it’s installed somewhere hot, damp or dusty, the hard drive inside it can fail earlier than it should.

Keep it out of reach and out of sight
A recorder sitting on an open shelf in a hallway or garage is an easy target. If an intruder can find it quickly, they can disconnect it before it captures anything useful, or take it with them on the way out.
Common places that work well for homes include:
- A locked cupboard or storage room
- A roof cavity or ceiling space, provided it’s accessible for future maintenance
- A dedicated cabinet or enclosure, sometimes lockable, built for the purpose
For businesses, a locked server room, comms cabinet or back-office space is usually the better option, particularly if the site already has restricted-access areas.
Ventilation and temperature
Recorders generate heat, especially when running multiple cameras at high resolution over a long period. If the unit is sealed into a small, poorly ventilated cupboard, it can run hotter than it should, which shortens the life of the hard drive and the recorder itself.
A spot with some airflow, or a cupboard with a vent or gap, is far better than a sealed box. Roof spaces can get very hot in an Australian summer, so if that’s where the unit ends up, it’s worth thinking about how the space handles heat over the warmer months.
Dry and dust-free
Moisture and electronics don’t mix. Garages, laundries and outdoor sheds can have damp air at certain times of year, and that’s not ideal for a device that’s meant to run continuously. Dust is a slower problem, but it builds up over time and can affect airflow inside the unit.
A dry, indoor space away from moisture sources is generally the safest bet, whether that’s a cupboard, a study, or a purpose-built cabinet.
Access to power and network cabling
The recorder needs a reliable power point nearby, and in most systems it also needs a connection back to your network if you want to view footage remotely or store data on a networked drive. This is where the cable runs from each camera all need to reach.

Wireless cameras still need a wired recorder
Even if your cameras communicate over Wi-Fi, the recorder itself is usually a fixed unit that needs power and, in many cases, a wired network connection for reliable performance. If your home or business relies on Wi-Fi for camera communication, it’s worth checking that coverage is solid where the recorder sits, since a weak signal near the recorder can affect how well footage is received and stored. If Wi-Fi coverage across the property is patchy, a broader look at your Wi-Fi setup might be worthwhile before finalising camera and recorder placement.
Think about future access
At some point, someone will need to get to the recorder. Maybe a hard drive needs replacing, maybe you’re adding cameras, maybe you just want to check a setting. A recorder wedged into the back of a roof space with no clear path in is going to make that job harder and slower than it needs to be.
A spot that’s secure but still reachable, without needing to move furniture or climb into a tight roof cavity every time, saves a lot of hassle later on.
Businesses have extra considerations
For commercial sites, recorder placement often ties into who has access to different parts of the building. A recorder in a shared storage area might be accessible to staff who don’t need to be anywhere near it. A locked IT room or a cabinet with restricted keys keeps footage secure and limits who can tamper with the system.
Larger sites with multiple recorders, or recorders feeding into a central monitoring point, need a bit more planning around cabling and network access. That’s usually worked out during the design stage of the installation rather than decided on the day.
A quick way to check if a location works
Before settling on a spot, it helps to ask:
- Can someone unauthorised reach it easily?
- Is it dry, and does it get reasonable airflow?
- Is there power and a network connection nearby, or a practical way to run one?
- Can you get to it in six months without a hassle?
If the answer to most of these is yes, it’s probably a reasonable spot.
