If you have started looking into CCTV for your home or business, you have probably come across the terms NVR and DVR. Installers use them a lot, and they get thrown around like everyone already knows what they mean. They do not mean the same thing, and the difference actually matters for how your cameras are wired and what kind of footage you end up with.
In short: a DVR works with older-style analogue cameras connected by coaxial cable, and it converts the video signal to digital once it reaches the recorder. An NVR works with IP (network) cameras, and the video is already digital before it gets to the recorder, sent over network cable instead.

What a DVR actually does
DVR stands for digital video recorder. It is designed to work with analogue cameras, the kind that send a raw video signal down a coaxial cable (often called BNC cable) to the recorder.
The camera itself does very little processing. It just captures the image and sends the signal. All the real work, converting that signal into a digital recording you can actually watch and store, happens inside the DVR.
This setup has been around for a long time and a lot of older CCTV systems in Australian homes and businesses still use it. If you are replacing a camera on an existing analogue system, you generally need to stick with cameras that match that same analogue signal type.
What an NVR actually does
NVR stands for network video recorder. It works with IP cameras, which do their own image processing onboard and send an already-digital video stream over a network cable, usually Cat5e or Cat6.
Because the camera does more of the work itself, the NVR’s job is mostly to receive that stream, store it, and let you view it live or play it back. Many IP cameras also get their power through the same network cable, using PoE (power over ethernet), which means one cable can carry both power and video.
The main practical difference: how footage gets to the recorder
This is the part that actually affects your property. A DVR system needs coaxial cable running from each camera back to the recorder, plus a separate power cable for each camera. An NVR system typically uses a single network cable per camera, carrying both data and power if PoE is used.
The recorder choice affects how cameras connect, how footage is stored and what cabling is needed. A CCTV system installation can tie those parts together, with professional data cabling added where the layout requires it.
Image quality differences
IP cameras used with NVR systems generally support higher resolutions than older analogue cameras used with DVRs. This is not a hard rule for every product on the market, but it is the general trend, and it is one of the main reasons new installs tend to go with NVR and IP cameras rather than analogue.
Higher resolution footage is more useful if you ever need to zoom in on a numberplate, a face, or fine detail from further away. Lower resolution footage from an older analogue camera can still be useful for general monitoring, just less useful for that kind of detail.
Which one suits your situation
There is no single right answer here. It depends on what you already have and what you are trying to achieve.
- If you have an existing analogue DVR system that still works fine for your needs, replacing a faulty camera with a matching analogue camera can be simpler than switching the whole system over.
- If you are starting from scratch, an NVR and IP camera setup is generally the more common approach for new installs, partly because of the cabling and image quality benefits above.
- If your property already has good network cabling infrastructure, or you are having it installed anyway, an NVR system tends to fit in more naturally.
Storage and remote viewing
Both DVR and NVR systems record to internal storage, usually a hard drive sized for however many days of footage you want to keep. How long footage is retained before it gets overwritten depends on the drive size, the number of cameras, and the resolution you are recording at.

Can you mix analogue and IP cameras on one system
Some recorders on the market are described as hybrid units, able to handle both analogue and IP inputs to some degree. Whether a specific recorder supports this, and how well, depends entirely on that particular product’s specifications. It is not something to assume without checking the actual unit in question.
For most straightforward setups, it is simpler to plan around one type of recorder and matching cameras rather than trying to mix the two.

If you are unsure whether your property is better suited to an NVR or DVR setup, the answer usually comes down to what cabling already exists, what your cameras need to do, and whether you are upgrading an old system or starting fresh. Getting this decided before any cabling goes in saves having to redo runs later.
