Where should a router be placed?

The short answer is that a router works best somewhere central, open and slightly raised, away from thick walls and other electronics. Most homes don’t have that spot sitting right next to where the internet cable comes in, which is exactly why so many routers end up in the wrong place by accident rather than design.

Placement matters because Wi-Fi is a radio signal. It spreads out from the router in every direction and loses strength as it passes through air, and loses a lot more strength when it has to pass through walls, floors or large appliances. Where you put the router decides how much of that signal actually reaches the rooms you use.

These checks apply to a single router. Larger or multi-level homes often need more than one access point.

Why the convenient corner often lets you down

In a lot of homes the router sits wherever the NBN connection point happens to be. That’s often a corner of a study, a laundry, or a cupboard near the front of the house. It’s convenient for the cabling, but it puts the router as far as possible from the rooms where people actually use the internet, such as bedrooms, living areas or a home office at the back of the house.

A router tucked inside a cabinet or behind a TV unit has the same problem. It might be neat, but every surface around it absorbs some of the signal before it even leaves the room. If you’ve noticed that your Wi-Fi is fine in one room and weak everywhere else, the router’s position is usually part of the reason.

Some homes need more than a better spot for the existing router. Multi-storey houses, homes with thick internal walls, or properties where the internet enters at one end of a long floor plan often need a wireless setup that’s actually designed around the building. That’s where a properly planned wireless network makes more difference than simply moving a single router from one corner to another.

What actually affects Wi-Fi signal from placement

Height matters more than people expect

A router sitting on the floor sends a lot of its signal straight down into the floorboards or slab. Raising it up, even just onto a shelf or a piece of furniture, lets the signal spread more evenly through the room and into nearby spaces. Around waist to shoulder height in an open position is generally more useful than a low cupboard or the floor.

Walls and building materials in the way

Not all walls affect Wi-Fi the same way. A plasterboard wall barely slows the signal down. Brick, concrete and besser block are a different story, and older Melbourne homes with solid brick internal walls can lose a surprising amount of signal strength over a short distance. Distance and line of sight

Signal strength drops with distance, but it drops faster once there’s no clear line of sight. A router two rooms away with three walls in between will usually perform worse than one that’s slightly further away but has an open hallway or living area in between.

Interference from other electronics

Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and even other people’s routers nearby can all interfere with Wi-Fi, particularly on the 2.4GHz band. Placing a router right next to a microwave or a large metal appliance like a fridge can noticeably weaken the signal in that direction.

A simple way to test placement before you commit

Before deciding a spot is final, it helps to test it properly rather than guessing.

  • Move the router to the new position temporarily, using a longer cable if needed.
  • Walk through the home with your phone open on the Wi-Fi settings screen, noting the signal bars in each room.
  • Check the rooms you actually use daily, not just the room the router happens to be in.
  • Try the same test at a different time of day, since nearby wireless networks and devices can change how much interference is present.

If one room is consistently weak no matter where you move a single router, that’s a sign the problem isn’t placement at all.

When placement alone isn’t the answer

A single router, no matter how well positioned, has a limited range. In a small unit or apartment that’s rarely an issue. In a larger house, a home with multiple levels, or a building with thick masonry walls, one router often can’t reach every room evenly, and that’s a physical limitation rather than a setup mistake.
