If you’ve got a CCTV system that’s a few years old, you might be wondering whether it can be improved rather than torn out and started from scratch. Maybe the picture quality isn’t great at night, the app keeps dropping out, or you want to add a couple more cameras but aren’t sure if the old recorder can handle it.
The short answer is that upgrading an existing system is often possible. Whether it’s straightforward or a bigger job depends on a handful of things: the type of cabling already in the walls, the recorder you’re running, and how the cameras are powered.

What actually decides if an upgrade is easy or not
Three things matter most when you’re looking at upgrading rather than replacing.
The cabling that’s already there
Older analog CCTV systems typically run on coaxial cable with a separate power cable to each camera. Newer IP camera systems use network cable (usually Cat5e or Cat6), which carries both power and data through a single cable using a method called Power over Ethernet, or PoE.
If your existing cabling is coax, swapping analog cameras for IP cameras usually isn’t a simple camera-for-camera swap. The new cameras need network cable, so in most cases new cabling has to be run to each camera position. This is the biggest factor in whether an upgrade is quick or involves opening up walls and ceilings again.
The recorder
Analog systems record through a DVR (digital video recorder), which accepts coax inputs. IP systems record through an NVR (network video recorder), which accepts network inputs. A DVR generally can’t run IP cameras, and an NVR generally can’t run old analog cameras. So if you’re changing camera type, the recorder usually needs to change too.
If you’re staying with the same camera type and just want a newer recorder with more storage or better remote access, that’s often a more contained upgrade, assuming the new recorder is compatible with the existing cameras.
Power arrangement
Analog cameras are usually powered separately from the video cable, often from a central power supply box. IP cameras powered over PoE take their power through the network cable itself, from the NVR or a PoE switch. This affects what’s physically at the recorder end, not just at the camera.
Common upgrade paths
A few scenarios come up often:
- Adding cameras to an existing NVR system. If there’s spare capacity on the recorder and existing network cabling can reach the new position, this is usually the simplest upgrade.
- Replacing an old DVR with a new one, keeping the same analog cameras. This can improve storage and remote viewing without touching the cabling, provided the new recorder supports the existing camera type.
- Moving from analog to IP cameras. This is the biggest jump. It generally means new cabling, a new recorder, and often a review of where the recorder sits on your home or business network.
- Extending an existing IP system with more cameras. Straightforward if there’s spare recorder capacity and a way to get network cable to the new camera locations.

When new cabling becomes part of the job
If an upgrade involves running new cable, that changes the scope of the work. Cable has to travel from each camera position back to the recorder, and the route depends on the building. A single-storey home with roof space access is a different job to a double-storey home with no accessible ceiling void, or a commercial fitout with concrete floors and limited cavity space.

Things worth checking before committing to an upgrade
A few practical points affect whether an upgrade is worth doing:
- Do the existing mounting positions still make sense, or have blind spots appeared since the system went in (new fencing, a pergola, a parked car that’s often in the way)?
- Is there enough storage on the recorder for the number of cameras and the recording quality you want?
- Does the current internet connection and router setup support remote viewing if that’s something you’re adding for the first time?
If remote access or app viewing is part of what you’re after, and the property’s Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the recorder location well, that’s worth sorting out alongside the camera upgrade rather than after it. Upgrade or full replacement?
There’s no fixed rule for when an upgrade stops making sense and a full replacement is the better option. It generally comes down to how much of the existing system can genuinely be reused. If the cabling is in good condition, in the right places, and rated for what you want to run through it, an upgrade can be a sensible way to improve the system without redoing everything. If the cabling is old, undersized, or in the wrong spots for where you actually want coverage now, a fuller replacement often ends up more practical than trying to patch around limitations.
