If your CCTV footage keeps freezing, dropping out, or looking worse than the camera’s specs suggest it should, the camera itself might not be the problem. Often it’s the cabling behind it.
Cameras are only as good as the connection carrying their signal back to the recorder. A high resolution camera on a poor cable run can end up producing footage that’s laggy, pixelated or unreliable. This is worth understanding before you assume a camera is faulty or needs replacing.

- Carries data and, with PoE, may also carry power.
- Poor termination can cause faults that look like camera problems.
Recorder
- Stores footage and manages camera streams.

- Supports remote viewing and connected devices.
- Congestion or weak coverage can make access inconsistent.
A good camera cannot compensate for a weak cable path or an unsuitable recorder setup.
What the cabling actually does
Most wired CCTV systems run on Ethernet cable, usually Cat5e or Cat6. This single cable carries both the video data and, in most setups, the power to the camera. That second part is called Power over Ethernet, or PoE.
Older analogue systems use coaxial cable for video, with a separate power cable running alongside it. Either way, the cable is doing two jobs at once in most modern setups: keeping the camera powered and getting a clean video signal back to the recorder.
When that cable is the wrong type, badly terminated, or run too far, one or both of those jobs starts to suffer.
Cable length and signal quality
Standard Ethernet cable has a practical distance limit before the signal starts to degrade. Beyond that point, you can see dropped frames, delayed footage, or a camera that intermittently loses connection to the recorder entirely.
This becomes relevant on larger properties, sheds, driveways, or commercial sites where a camera needs to sit a long way from where the recorder is installed. The distance from the recorder to each camera location needs to be planned before cable goes in, not worked out afterwards when a camera won’t hold a stable connection.
Power delivery over the cable
Because PoE sends power down the same cable as the data, cable quality affects power delivery too. A longer run, a cheaper cable, or a run with several joins in it can mean the camera isn’t getting a strong or consistent enough power supply.
Symptoms of this are easy to mistake for a faulty camera: it might reboot on its own, drop connection during peak usage, or fail to power up reliably. Before ruling a camera as defective, it’s worth checking whether the cable run itself is within a workable distance and properly terminated.
Interference and cable placement
Data cable can pick up interference if it’s run alongside mains power cabling for long stretches, or coiled tightly near electrical equipment. This doesn’t always cause total failure, but it can introduce flickering, banding, or intermittent glitches in the footage that are hard to diagnose after the fact.

Cable quality and terminations
Not all cable is equal, and not all terminations are done the same way. A cable with poor internal shielding, or connectors that aren’t crimped properly, can work fine on the day of installation and then start failing weeks or months later as the connection loosens or degrades.
This is one of the more common causes of CCTV systems that “used to work fine” and now drop out randomly. The camera hasn’t changed. The connection has.
Wired versus wireless reliability
Wired cabling generally gives a more stable and consistent connection than wireless cameras, because it isn’t affected by Wi-Fi congestion, walls, or distance from a router in the same way. Planning cable runs before installation
Getting cabling right isn’t just about running a cable from A to B. It involves working out camera placement, cable lengths, where the recorder sits, and how cable is routed through walls, ceilings or conduit without creating interference or exceeding sensible run lengths.
