You’ve found a good deal on some cameras online, or maybe a neighbour handed you a box of gear they no longer need. Before you get too far into planning, the real question is whether those specific cameras will work with a proper system, not just whether they can be physically mounted.
The honest answer is that it depends on the cameras, the cabling already in place, and what you want the system to do. Some setups are straightforward. Others turn into a compromise that leaves you with gaps in coverage or footage that’s harder to access than it should be.
Compatibility check
What needs checking before supplied cameras are installed
Power
- Confirm whether the cameras use PoE, plug-in power or batteries.
- Check where power will come from at each location.
Recorder
- Make sure the camera type matches the recorder inputs.
- Check channel limits and supported resolutions.
Cabling
- Confirm whether existing cable can be reused.
- Allow for new routes where the supplied system needs network cable.
App and account
- Check login ownership and mobile app availability.
- Avoid systems tied to an account the property owner cannot control.
The brand name alone does not confirm compatibility. Power, recorder and cable requirements still need to match.
Why it’s not a simple yes or no
CCTV cameras aren’t as interchangeable as they look on a shelf. Two cameras that look identical can use completely different power methods, video formats, or app ecosystems. A camera bought as part of a bundled kit is often built to only work with its matching recorder or app, and won’t necessarily talk to other brands or existing cabling.
This matters because a home or business isn’t just buying a camera. It’s buying a system: the camera, the cable run, the recorder or cloud storage, and the way footage gets viewed. If any one part of that chain doesn’t match, the whole system either won’t work or won’t work well.
Power over Ethernet versus Wi-Fi cameras
Many wired cameras use Power over Ethernet, known as PoE. One cable carries both power and video, which keeps installation cleaner and avoids extra power points near the camera. If your existing cabling was run for PoE cameras, a customer-supplied PoE camera from a different brand may still work, provided it uses standard protocols.
Wi-Fi cameras skip the cabling question but bring a different set of issues. They rely on a strong, stable wireless signal reaching the mounting point, which isn’t always guaranteed outdoors or at the far end of a property. Analogue and older systems
Older CCTV systems often use analogue cabling that isn’t compatible with modern IP cameras without extra conversion hardware. If you’re trying to add a newer camera to an older system, or vice versa, that mismatch needs to be identified before anything gets mounted, not after.
What existing cabling has to do with it
If a property already has CCTV cabling in the walls or roof space, the type and condition of that cabling has a direct bearing on which cameras will actually work. Cable that was run for one camera type doesn’t automatically suit another, and cable runs that are too long, damaged, or poorly terminated can cause dropouts even with the right camera.

- Cameras bought as part of a kit that only work with a matching app or recorder
- Cameras rated for indoor use being mounted outdoors

- Recorders that only support a limited number of camera brands or models
None of these issues are obvious just by looking at the box. They usually only show up once someone tries to get the camera talking to the rest of the system.
What’s worth checking before you buy
If you haven’t purchased cameras yet, a few questions are worth answering first:
- Does the camera need its own app, or can it connect to a standard recorder?
- Is it PoE, Wi-Fi, or does it need a separate power supply?
- Is it rated for outdoor use if that’s where it’s going?
- Does it support the video format your existing recorder expects, if you have one?

Where placement fits into this
Even if the cameras themselves are compatible, where security cameras should be installed and how many a property actually needs both affect whether the equipment you’ve got will do the job. A camera that’s perfectly good on paper won’t cover a driveway properly if it’s mounted in the wrong spot or if there simply aren’t enough cameras to cover the entry points that matter.
Getting a system that actually works together
