Common CCTV installation mistakes and how to avoid them

Plenty of CCTV systems get installed and still fail to do their job properly. The cameras are there, the footage is recording, but when something actually happens, the angle is wrong, the image is too dark, or the recording drops out. Most of these problems come down to a handful of avoidable mistakes made during planning or installation.

The most expensive mistakes usually come from planning decisions, not the camera model.

Getting camera placement wrong

Camera position is where most systems fall down. A camera mounted too high might capture the top of someone’s head instead of their face. One mounted facing a bright window or driveway during the day can end up with a washed-out image once the sun moves.

Before fixing any camera in place, it helps to walk the property at different times of day. Morning and afternoon sun hits differently, and a spot that looks fine at 10am might be useless by 4pm. Entry points, gates and areas where people would actually approach the building matter more than covering every square metre of a yard.

Skipping the cable and power planning

It is easy to pick camera positions first and worry about cabling later. This often backfires. A camera might sit in the perfect spot for coverage but be nowhere near a power point or an easy cable run, which means longer runs, more drilling, or compromises on where the recorder can sit.

Poor camera height and rushed cable planning are hard to correct after everything has been fixed in place. A properly planned CCTV installation deals with those decisions before drilling starts.

If a job also involves running new data points around the property, it is worth considering whether the cabling should be handled as part of a broader data cabling job rather than treated as a separate, smaller task.

Relying on Wi-Fi without checking the signal first

Wireless cameras are convenient, but they still need a stable connection to work properly. A camera mounted at the far end of a yard or on a detached shed might be too far from the router to hold a reliable signal, especially through brick walls or metal roofing.

Weak Wi-Fi shows up as dropped footage, delayed alerts, or a camera that goes offline overnight. If you’re not sure whether your network will reach every camera position, it’s worth reading through whether security cameras actually need Wi-Fi to work before assuming a wireless setup will cover the whole property.

Ignoring night vision and glare

Daytime footage can look sharp and still turn into a blur of white light at night. Infrared cameras pointed at a nearby wall, fence, or even a spider web can bounce light straight back into the lens, washing out the image. Cameras aimed through glass often have the same problem, with the IR reflecting off the glass instead of lighting up the scene.

Testing a camera after dark, not just during setup in daylight, catches this early. If the footage is unusable at night, it defeats a big part of the reason for having a camera in the first place.

Overlooking storage and recording settings

A camera can be perfectly placed and still be useless if the recorder isn’t set up to keep footage long enough, or if motion detection settings are too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Some systems overwrite older footage faster than expected, especially with several high resolution cameras all recording continuously.

It’s worth checking how many days of footage the system actually retains before it starts overwriting, and adjusting motion zones so the system isn’t triggered constantly by passing traffic or tree movement, or missing genuine activity because the sensitivity is set too low.

Poor weatherproofing and mounting

Outdoor cameras need to handle rain, wind and temperature changes without letting moisture into the housing or cable connections. A rushed install can leave gaps around the mounting bracket or cable entry point, which lets water in over time and causes fogging inside the lens or corrosion at the connections.

Loose mounting brackets are another issue. A camera that shifts slightly in strong wind, or gets bumped and never realigned, can end up pointing at the wrong angle for weeks before anyone notices.

Not thinking about privacy and neighbouring properties

Camera angles that capture a neighbour’s yard, windows or shared driveway can cause problems even when there’s no intention to invade anyone’s privacy. It’s worth adjusting the field of view so cameras focus on your own property boundaries rather than picking up more than needed next door.

This matters more in tighter suburban blocks or shared driveways, where a slight change in angle can make a real difference to what a camera actually sees.

Different considerations for homes and businesses

Some of these mistakes show up differently depending on the type of property. A business with multiple entry points and staff moving through the space has different blind spot risks than a house with a front door and side gate. Most CCTV mistakes come from rushing the planning stage. Walking the property, checking sun angles at different times of day, testing footage at night, and mapping out cable runs before mounting anything all take a bit of extra time upfront. That time is usually far less than the effort involved in repositioning cameras or rerunning cables after the system is already installed.
